Inpatient Surgery Ward is a ward of our hospital dedicated to patients who are undergoing surgical procedures and require overnight or extended hospitalization for recovery. It is typically staffed by a range of healthcare professionals, including general surgery specialists, nurses and other specialists, to ensure comprehensive care for patients before, during, and after surgery.
Key Components of Surgery Ward:
o Patients are assessed before surgery to ensure they are physically prepared for the procedure. This may involve medical history, blood tests and imaging.
o After surgery, we monitor patient progression, complications and adverse effects for both surgery and anaesthesia, such as infections, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anaesthesia
o Pain management, the fluid balance and other symptomatic treatments is a priority in this phase, often using a combination of medications (oral, intravenous, or through patient-controlled analgesia.
o Nurses are key in providing round-the-clock care, monitoring vital signs, administering medications and ensuring the patient is comfortable.
o Patients are educated about their recovery process, follow-up appointments, dietary restrictions, and any lifestyle changes needed.
o The ward is typically divided into individual patient rooms, which may include basic amenities (bed, bathroom, seating for visitors and medical equipment (monitors, IV stands, oxygen supply, etc.).
o The ward may be dedicated to specific types of surgery (e.g., orthopedic, cardiovascular, thoracic) or be a general surgical unit(general surgery is speciality that deals with abdominal surgery and others) that handles a variety of cases.
