Inpatient Surgery Ward is a ward of our hospital dedicated to patients who are undergoing surgical procedures and require overnight or extended hospitalization for recovery. It is typically staffed by a range of healthcare professionals, including general surgery specialists, nurses and other specialists, to ensure comprehensive care for patients before, during, and after surgery.

Key Components of Surgery Ward:

  1. Preoperative Care:

o          Patients are assessed before surgery to ensure they are physically prepared for the procedure. This may involve medical history, blood tests and imaging. 

  1. Postoperative Care:

o          After surgery, we monitor patient progression, complications and adverse effects for both surgery and anaesthesia, such as infections, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anaesthesia

o          Pain management, the fluid balance and other symptomatic treatments is a priority in this phase, often using a combination of medications (oral, intravenous, or through patient-controlled analgesia.

  1. Nursing Care:

o          Nurses are key in providing round-the-clock care, monitoring vital signs, administering medications and ensuring the patient is comfortable.

  1. Patient Education:

o          Patients are educated about their recovery process, follow-up appointments, dietary restrictions, and any lifestyle changes needed.

  1. Facilities:

o          The ward is typically divided into individual patient rooms, which may include basic amenities (bed, bathroom, seating for visitors and medical equipment (monitors, IV stands, oxygen supply, etc.).

  1. Types of Surgery:

o          The ward may be dedicated to specific types of surgery (e.g., orthopedic, cardiovascular, thoracic) or be a general surgical unit(general surgery is speciality that deals with abdominal surgery and others)  that handles a variety of cases.

Types of Patients in Surgery Ward:

  • Elective Surgery Patients: These are patients who have scheduled procedures.
  • Emergency Surgery Patients: These patients require immediate surgery.
  • Postoperative Recovery Patients: Individuals who are recovering from major surgery and need continuous monitoring and care.

  • General Surgery: Abdominal procedures, gallbladder removal, or hernia repairs.
  • Orthopedic Surgery: Bone and joint surgeries, such as hip or knee replacements.
  • Neurosurgery: Operations on the brain or spine.
  • Urology: Surgeries related to the urinary tract or reproductive organs.
  • Gynecology and Obstetrics Surgery: Surgeries related to female reproductive organs such as Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or Cesarean section (C-section).
  • Thoracic Surgery: Surgeries related to surgical procedures performed on the organs and structures inside the chest, excluding the heart, such as Lung resections.
  • ENT Surgery: Surgeries related to the ear, nose, and throat, such as Tonsillectomy.
